Is the pipeline safe?
Galsi is employing the world's top experts, trading partners and technology to guarantee the maximum safety of the pipeline both during laying phase and subsequent operation. Galsi adopts stringent control and verification procedures at every stage of the project to ensure that safety standards and legislation are fully respected at all times. Once in operation the pipeline will also be subject to regular controls and maintenance. The risk of breakage or accidents is very low.
Doesn't the laying of a pipeline for the first time in such deep waters present technical risks?
No. The technology has made enormous breakthroughs in recent years and undersea pipelines have already been realised at great depths. The Bluestream pipeline linking Russia to Turkey under the Black Sea at a depth of over 2000 m is just one example. These precedents ensure that Galsi can acquire all the engineering expertise and technological know-how to safely lay pipe at depths close to 3000 m without technical hazards.
What would happen in the event of a leak at sea?
It should be stressed however that leaks with this type of piping are extremely rare. In the event of an offshore (or onshore) leak, the pipeline will be securely evacuated and extraordinary maintenance work will begin to replace or repair the damaged section (including the use of Remote Operated Vehicles - ROVs).
What security measures have been taken to protect the compressor stations and the pipeline?
Galsi has scrupulously adhered to international construction and design standards for this type of plant (see for instance DM 17/04/08). The compressor stations will be issued with a special certificates attesting that the plant design and use of materials and equipment are safe, as with any other industrial facility.
What risks does the compressor stations present for the safety of the local population?
The compressor stations are built to the highest international engineering standards in accordance with the most stringent regulatory requirements and present a very low probability of risk. The facilities are equipped with sensors and alarm systems to signal any malfunction which might represent a potential risk. In the event the systems automatically block the gas flow to prevent any further consequences. We should also mention that compressor stations are classified under the Italian Law 334/99 as plants not vulnerable to significant accidents.
Will it be dangerous to pass close to places where the pipeline is laid?
No, there is no danger to people passing or living close to places where the pipeline is buried or laid. A network of around 20,000 km of underground pipelines similar to Galsi already cross the Italian mainland creating no danger to property or people.
